David first gained experience of Musical Direction at Alcester Grammar
School, where he was Musical Director for shows including The Sound
of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Dracula Spectacula!
and Liberty Beat. He continued gaining experience when he moved
to Cardiff to begin his studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and
Drama. There he became the Musical Director of St James' Amateur Operatic
Society.
In April 2001, David was appointed Musical Director of the Cardiff Arms
Park Male Choir. He has conducted the choir in venues around England and
Wales, including on the hallowed turf of the Arms Park in front of a capacity
crowd, and at the Millennium Stadium. He has also conducted them in concerts
in the Czech Republic, France and Switzerland. In June 2006 the choir
celebrated its fortieth anniversary with a grand concert at St David's
Hall. In this, David conducted a massed male choir of over 400 voices,
a fifty-strong orchestra, Llanishen Fach Primary School Choir and guest
soloist Hayley Westenra. He has also conducted the choir in collaborations
with Wessex Male Choir, Toronto Welsh Male Choir, Australian Welsh Male
Choir, Peter Karrie, Max Boyce, the Taunton Concert Band and the South
Wales Police Band. David has conducted the choir in a live appearance
on BBC1's Grandstand, in a recent BBC trailer with Goldie Lookin
Chain, and on Strictly Come Dancing!
In May 2007, David was appointed Musical Director of the world-famous
Dowlais Male Choir.
In the world of musical theatre, David has been Musical Director for
a number of productions including Cheltenham University's Edinburgh Fringe
perfomances of Godspell, Ripley Theatre's performances of Rumpelstitskin
(Edinburgh), The Tartan Snow Baby (Sherman Theatre, Cardiff)
and Rameo and Eweliet (Edinburgh and Sherman Theatre) and Everyman's
The Three Pigs (St Fagan's, Cardiff). He was assistant musical
director for Wind In The Willows and Space Invasion!,
both at the New Theatre, Cardiff. In 2007, he musically directed Oliver!
at the New Theatre, Cardiff, and High School Musical in Treorchy
and Brecon. He also orchestrated and conducted Raise The Roof
at the Wales Millennium Centre, which featured six school choirs, performing
seperately and as a massed choir of 400 along with a 20 piece orchestra.
David has also conducted the Black Mountain Male Chorus and the Welsh
Sinfonia.
